Home Routine That Makes or Breaks Your Acne Treatment Results
Post-Treatment Skin Care: How to Protect Your Results Between Acne Treatments
If you've just had an acne treatment with us, what you do in the next 24 to 72 hours matters just as much as the treatment itself. We often get asked, "Why did my skin look great right after my facial, and then breakout a few days later?" The answer usually comes down to at-home care. Below are the post-treatment skin care tips we give every client, and the mistakes that most often undo good results.
1. Keep Your Hands Off Your Face
This is the most common way results get reversed. After extractions or an acne treatment, your skin is in an active healing state. Touching, picking, or resting your chin in your hands introduces bacteria and can reopen healing pores, leading to new breakouts or even scarring. Give your skin at least 24-48 hours to recover undisturbed.
2. Skip Makeup for the First Day
We know it's tempting to cover any redness right away, but applying makeup too soon after an acne facial can clog freshly cleaned pores and trap bacteria before the skin has had a chance to close and calm down. If you need coverage, ask us about mineral-based, non-comedogenic options that are safer for freshly treated skin.
3. Avoid Heat, Sweat, and Sun for 24-48 Hours
Hot showers, saunas, intense workouts, and direct sun exposure all increase inflammation and can irritate skin that's already been through an active treatment. Excess heat and sweat can also aggravate post-treatment breakouts. Stick to lukewarm water and light activity for a day or two, and always wear SPF when you do head outside. Sun exposure on freshly treated skin can lead to hyperpigmentation and dark marks that take much longer to fade than a normal breakout.
4. Simplify Your Routine
Right after treatment isn't the time to introduce new actives, exfoliants, or trending skincare products. Stick to a gentle cleanser, a basic moisturizer, and SPF. Adding retinoids, acids, or unfamiliar products while skin is healing is one of the top causes of unexpected irritation or breakouts post-facial. If you're unsure whether a product is safe to use this week, ask us before you try it.
5. Don't Skip Your Follow-Up Products
If we sent you home with specific aftercare products or instructions, they're not optional extras, they're part of the treatment. Acne treatment results depend on consistency between sessions, not just what happens in the treatment room. Skipping steps at home is one of the biggest reasons clients feel like "the treatment isn't working" when really, the treatment plan was never fully followed.
6. Expect Some Purging, But Know the Difference
A small amount of purging (tiny surface bumps in the days after treatment) can be a normal part of skin cell turnover. But if you're seeing large, inflamed, or painful breakouts, that's not purging; that's a reaction, and we want to know about it. Don't wait until your next appointment. Reach out sooner rather than later so we can adjust your care plan before it snowballs.
The Bottom Line
Great acne treatment results are a partnership. What happens in our treatment room gets you started, but what you do at home in the days after is what determines whether those results last. If you're ever unsure about a product, a routine change, or how your skin is reacting, don't guess, just ask us. We'd rather answer a quick question than see you back at square one.
